I’m New

Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God

Some helpful things…

What is a church service like?

Sunday is one of our main focuses of gathering for the week. We gather to worship God.

Worship is usually led by our Area Resource Minister, Local Worship Leaders, or visiting preachers from the area.  The service is a mixture of singing, bible reading, prayer and a talk. We also celebrate Communion every Sunday.

Some services are live streamed on Zoom.

You are very free to join in as much or as little as you like.  If anything feels unfamiliar feel free to ask the person who welcomed you before the service or anyone sat near to you.

How long does a service last?

Our Sunday services last around an hour and then followed by refreshments and chat in our large hall.

What about music?

Music is important to us and can very often be a means through which we connect with one another.  We sing a mixture of modern and traditional hymns and use piano and a small music group.

How will I know what to do?

There are no fixed rules so you will be fine, but please do feel relaxed and join in as you are able.  We frequently stand to sing hymns and sit to pray, but our worship leader will usually guide everyone as to what to do.  We are a lot more relaxed about doing “the right thing” than you imagine.

What is communion?

Communion takes every Sunday and is a moment when Christians share bread and wine to remember Jesus, particularly that Jesus breaks down social divisions to bring us all together.  As an “open and inclusive” church everyone is welcome and invited to share communion with us – being invited to share bread and wine together is a gift to us and a sign of being one people.

Usually bread and wine are brought to you in your seat, but again the worship leader will guide the congregation through the service.

What should I wear?

Simply whatever you are most comfortable wearing.  There are no expectations about clothing, so please feel relaxed and be yourself in all that can mean for you.

What about children in the services?

Children and young people are always welcome at Bulwell URC.

On Sunday mornings, they head straight downstairs to our halls at 10:30 am for Children & Youth Church – a fun, faith-filled session with Bible stories, games, crafts, and activities designed just for them. [Find out more here.]

All our children and youth leaders are DBS checked and take part in regular safeguarding training, so you can be assured they’re in safe hands while you enjoy the main service upstairs.

What about giving money to the church?

There’s no expectation or pressure to give — we’re just glad you’re here.

If you do feel led to support the church financially, there are a few simple ways to do so. An offering bag is passed around during the service, and there’s also a card reader available at the back of church.

Many of our regular attenders give through standing orders, cash, or our envelope scheme, which allows us to Gift Aid donations and make them go even further.

If you’d like to find out more about giving or setting up regular support, just ask — we’d be happy to help.

Praying together?

Prayer is a vital part of our worship and church life — though if you’re new, it might feel a little unfamiliar at first.

At its heart, prayer is about making space in our thoughts and hearts for God, for others, and for ourselves. It’s a way of holding people or situations tenderly before God, even if we don’t have the words.

If you would like someone to pray with you after the service — either silently, aloud, or with laying on of hands — please speak to the worship leader, who will be glad to pray with you, along with another member of our prayer team.
